The WhatsApp Green Tick: What It Is and How to Get It

Three different things get called verification and only one is the tick. Here is which is which, and why most businesses will not get it.

The green tick — Meta calls it the Official Business Account badge — is a mark next to a business name in WhatsApp confirming Meta considers the account notable and authentic. It is the thing merchants ask about most and understand least, largely because three different processes all get described as "verification".

Three things called verification

Untangling these saves a lot of wasted effort:

If someone offers to sell you a green tick, they are selling either business verification — which is free and which you can do yourself — or nothing at all.

What the tick actually changes

Less than people hope. Your display name shows in the chat header and in notifications even before a customer saves your number, and a tick appears beside it. That is the visible difference.

It does not raise your messaging limits, does not change conversation pricing, does not affect template approval, and does not make anything work that did not work before. Those are governed by business verification and by your quality rating — see Meta's messaging limits and our guide to what a yellow quality rating means.

Who realistically gets it

Meta's criterion is notability: whether your brand is well known and widely covered by sources Meta recognises. In practice that means independent press coverage — news articles about your business, not press releases, not paid placements, not your own blog.

The uncomfortable summary for most merchants: if your business has never been written about in the press, you are unlikely to be granted the tick, regardless of revenue, order volume or how long you have traded. It is a notability test, not a legitimacy test. A small business doing excellent work quietly will not qualify, and that is not a defect in your application.

See Meta's Business Help Centre for the current criteria, which Meta revises periodically.

The numbers behind the decision

It helps to size this honestly against the things that do move revenue.

Put like that, the ordering is obvious. Three of those four are hours of work with certain payoff; the fourth is a badge you cannot schedule.

What to do instead

  1. Complete business verification. Free, achievable, and the one that actually unlocks capability. Submit your registration documents in Meta Business Manager.
  2. Set a clear display name. Customers see it whether or not you have a tick, so make it the name they know you by.
  3. Complete your business profile — description, address, hours, website. This is what a customer checks when deciding whether you are real.
  4. Protect your quality rating. A number that is not blocked and reported looks far more legitimate than a badge does, and unlike the tick it is entirely within your control — see managing opt-outs, frequency and quality.
  5. Reply fast. Nothing signals a real business like an answer in two minutes.

What builds trust without a badge

Green tickNo — Meta's discretionModerate
Business verificationYesUnlocks limits, not visible
Complete profile with hours and addressYesHigh
Fast first replyYesVery high
Consistent display name across channelsYesHigh
Good quality ratingYesHigh — a blocked number reads as spam

Four of those six are entirely yours, and together they matter more to a customer deciding whether to buy than a badge does. The tick is worth applying for if you qualify and worth forgetting if you do not.

If you are told no

You can reapply, and Meta's criteria change over time, so a rejection now is not permanent. What changes the outcome is genuine press coverage, which is a public-relations project rather than a WhatsApp one.

In the meantime nothing about your setup is blocked. You can run automations, send campaigns to opted-in customers, and reach your full messaging tier without it. Complete business verification, finish your profile, and move on to the things that actually affect sales — starting with getting your number onto the API properly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the green tick on WhatsApp?

There is no application that guarantees it. Meta grants Official Business Account status at its discretion, based mainly on whether your brand is notable — meaning covered by independent press. Complete business verification first, since that is free and unlocks real capability.

Is business verification the same as the green tick?

No, and this is the most common confusion. Business verification confirms your business is real by document submission, is achievable for most businesses, and unlocks higher messaging limits. It gives you no badge. The green tick is a separate, discretionary notability decision.

Does the green tick increase my messaging limits?

No. Messaging limits are governed by your business verification status, your sending volume and your quality rating. The tick is a display badge and changes none of those.

Can I pay someone to get me a WhatsApp green tick?

No. Anyone selling one is either charging you for business verification, which is free and which you can complete yourself in Meta Business Manager, or selling nothing at all. Meta does not sell the badge.

Why was my green tick application rejected?

Almost always notability rather than anything wrong with your business. Meta looks for independent press coverage, not revenue or trading history. You can reapply later, but what changes the outcome is press coverage rather than a better application.
